Balharry, E.A. and D.W. Macdonald (1999). Cost-effective electric fencing for protecting gamebirds against Pine Marten Martes martes predation. Mammal Review 29:67-72.

Abstract

We tested various configurations of electric fencing on captive and wild caught Pine Martens, in test enclosures. Simple configurations of electric wires could be breached by the Martens, whereas a new design of an electrified overhang prevented the Martens from crossing a fence. The financial cost of protecting game bird enclosures with electric fencing is calculated and compared to the potential financial losses from predation on the birds. These figures confirm that electric fencing is cost effective.
